Founded in March of 1817 by a group of political exiles who had been banished from France by King Louis XVIII, the city of Demopolis, Alabama offers the perfect combination of historic ambiance and modern industry.

Located in Marengo County in the west central part of Alabama, the area surrounding Demopolis is commonly known as the Black Belt Region and Upper Coastal Plain Area.

Strategically positioned within the geographic triangle formed by Tuscaloosa to the north, Mobile to the south and Montgomery to the east, Demopolis is the gateway to the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway System.

Offering many recreational opportunities, local residents particularly enjoy boating and fishing on 10,000-acre Demopolis Lake, which was created by the construction of the Demopolis Lock and Dam.
